Giant beetroot Chioggia

Often when I saw it growing,  I told myself I will harvest later when I am ready to eat.

Days passed, perhaps months passed.  I finally harvested it.

It was huge!  I place a medium side glove beside it.  Then, when I came home, I took another picture with a pencil on top and a bowl of
pasticcios which happened to be here.

I am not quite sure how to cook it.  I have a smaller version of this gigantic.  I plan to make a soup and see how it goes.

This is one of the wonderful unexpected on my property this year.

Green Pearls

When I first owned a farming property on Ebey Island (it’s on a river delta, not on an island), I hired a homeless person to help me to build a shelter using 10 X 10 dog kennel. I bought two sets, each set with four sides. Unfortunately, when we came back to build the second set the next day, one panel was gone and we were forced to build two connected shelters. At one point, I bought four 275 gallon storage tanks as a water tank and built a rainwater collection system that I was very proud of - for one year. Then, the high wind blew off the plastic roof one year. The cable ties did not hold gutters in place. Some parts of the gutters got twisted and broken. I tried to band aid the system a few times, but it was difficult by myself. One main source of the problem was that the ground was not leveled when we placed the shelter. I use one part of the shelter to store tools and apparently a grape tree. A friend gave it to me, but since there are deers that would roam on the property,...

Taro Pastry 芋頭酥

I missed my Dad's taro pastry -  芋頭酥 .  It's almost mid-autumn festival, 中秋節.  The air was bad in Seattle for more than week.  Since I was being cooked in the house for a week, I decided to make  taro pastry,  芋頭酥 and give them away as the Chinese custom.  😂 Of course, only if they turned out to be 色,香, 味俱全 - perfect balance of color, smell and taste. This time of the year, the Westerns have Thanksgiving followed by Christmas.  The Chinese has mid-autumn festival  中秋節 followed by Chinese New Year 春節.  Both the West and the East promote gatherings and food... lots of fatty food.  😅 I followed 宗辰的職人日誌 again.  However, I wasn't able to find purple sweet potato powder in Asian supermarket and it was quite expensive on Amazon - $3.22 / ounce.  I did have green tea powder, but that will look totally weird on taro pastry.  In the end, I decided to use dark rye flour (😆!)...
